Divide the percent by 100, then multiply by the number: (X ÷ 100) × Y. Example: 20% of 1500 = (20 ÷ 100) × 1500 = 300.
Use "X is what % of Y": (marks obtained ÷ total marks) × 100. For 450 out of 550, that is (450 ÷ 550) × 100 = 81.8%.
((New value − Old value) ÷ Old value) × 100. A positive answer means an increase, a negative answer means a decrease. Example: 200 → 260 is +30%; 260 → 200 is −23.08%.
If something rises from 20% to 25%, that is a rise of 5 percentage points — but a 25% relative increase (5 ÷ 20 × 100). Mixing the two up is one of the most common percentage mistakes.
